Counter attack with the 4-2-3-1

The basics of tactics dictate that if you cannot keep possesion.
You must do you're best to move the ball to the goal as quickly as possible.
No other formation achieves this better than the 4-2-3-1
With 4 defenders and 2 midfield destroyers.
Followed by 3 pacey attackers and a instinctive finisher.
This counter attacking set up is geared for teams who like to score on the run.
Here is my favourite pick of players for the 4-2-3-1 (only players playing today)

Casillas
Alves Hummels Ramos Marcelo
Xabi Alonso Scholes
C.Ronaldo Ozil Messi
Gomez

The dynamism of the 4-3-3

The most popular formation amongst the top teams in Europe today.

Real Madrid
Barcelona
Bayern Munich
Napoli
Manchester City

The 4-3-3 is being employed in a few different ways around the world.
The most evident of them being the following (Barcelona)

As it can be seen, Barcelona as a team have made triangles all over the pitch as long as their formation stays.

We all know that triangles and football are a match made in heaven.

4-3-3 is a very dynamic formation and allows for a lot of movement.
In the sense that Messi need not stick to his Central striker position, he may drift out to Pedro while Pedro seeks to be more central.
This drifting is what causes defenses to be boggled by the movement of Barcelona.
As long as the triangle is complete, there is always a pass to be made.

The classic 4-4-2
